Description

Rare heart shaped of the World, based upon Oronce Fine's hear shaped world map of 1534, which is known in only 2 examples.

Oronce Fine was perhaps the most important French Cartographer of his era. It offered a more recognizable presentation of the World than Fine's double cordiform map of 1531. In the text, Fine states that "15 years ago I designed this map in the form of a human heart for teh celebrated savant King Francis I . . .and now after much delay it is published." The map includes significant cartographic advances along the East Coast of America and is one of the earliest maps to accurately depict this coastline. The exploration of the Spanish Conquistadors along the Pacific Coast were also shown.

Fine's heart shaped map was copied several times, including Haggi Ahmed's Turkish World Map on six wood blocks (known in about 9 examples), published in Venice in 1559 and Giovanni Cimerlino's heart shaped map, published in Verona or Venice in 1566. Fine's map was again copied in 1586 by Giacomo Franco in Venice (known in about 3 examples).

The map was originally separately published and later appeared in Moullart Sanson's rare Introduction a la Geographie. While Sanson's map is not as rare as the others, we are not aware of any example of the map appearing on the market or at auction in the past 30 years.
