Description

One of the most important American maps of the 19th Century. The earliest accurate map of the interior of North America, from St. Louis north to the Canadian Border, and west along the Missouri River. The map is based upon systematic instrument surveys by the French mathematician and astronomer Nicollet between 1836 and 1840. Nicollet's map initiated the scientific mapping of the trans-Mississippi West by the US War Dept. Nicollet's was chosen to lead an exploration and mapping of the upper Mississippi watershed, being the only civilian so commissioned for nearly 40 years. Fremont and Emory worked on the project, which became the most important map of its time. Schwartz & Ehrenberg p.265-68.
