Scarce map of Florida, the Carolinas north to Cape Hatteras and the western Caribbean based upon the voyages of Alonso d'Ojedo and other contemporary work. The map derives its name from an Indian Village on the River Jordan. In addition to Chicora country, Duare Country and Alpache country are also shown. A fascinating early projection of Florida. An interesting an highly collectable map of the region, naming rivers, settlements, islands, bays and other features, both on the mainland and in the Caribbean, where the map extends to St. Croix and Virgin Gorda. Decorative cartouche. Cumming Mapping of the Southeast 141. Scarce and desireable.
Pieter van der Aa (1659-1733) was a Dutch mapmaker and publisher who printed pirated editions of foreign bestsellers and illustrated books, but is best known for his voluminous output of maps and atlases. Van der Aa was born to a German stonecutter from Holstein. Interestingly, all three van der Aa sons came to be involved in the printing business. Hildebrand was a copper engraver and Boudewyn was a printer.
