Description

Interesting regional map, extending from Oregon Territory, Nebraska Territory and Minnesota Territory in the north, to Indian Territory and Northern Texas to Monterrey and Central California in the South, centered on the region which would later include Cheyenne and Denver. The map provides an excellent look at the region covered by John Fremont, and takes great care not to include many of the more speculative cartographic features of the time. The full reach of the Upper Colorado River extends to the Continental Divide. The Rio Virgen is shown, but the mythical rivers of the west, which dominated earlier maps, are not shown. Nice detail of the Indian Tribes in Oregon Territory, which extends to the Rocky Mountains. Tulare Lake is Lake Chintache, an odd name which quickly disappeared. The Gold Regions in California are shown, as is Mt. Smith, an early reference to the Jedidiah Smith. Excellent Indian detail in Oregon Territory and Nebraska Territory, including a number of the early Forts and Trading Posts. St. Vraith's Fort is shown, as is Fort Laramie, Manuel's Fort, Ft. Mandan or Lewis & Clark, etc. A scarce early map, showing the borders of the region immediately after the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo.
