Description

Celebrating The Transcontinental Railroad

Rare second 1873 edition of Haasis & Lubrecht's scarce decorative map of the United States, including "Yellowstone Park".

Striking and highly detailed coast-to-coast map of the US, featuring a decorative panoramic view of the US from New York City to San Francisco Bay and also illustrating the Rocky Mountains and the Mississippi River, among other recognizable landmarks. The map also includes an elegant title and vignette featuring a steam locomotive.

The map is a revised version of the Lubrecht and Rosa map "The American Continent" of 1864, first issued in 1871. The statistics at the top of the 1864 map are here replaced with a view "From the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean" emphasizing the recently completed transcontinental railroad. Also, an elaborate title and view of a steam engine and train station have replaced the more subdued 1864 title. Population tables of the United States are added to the left and right sides of the map. The map itself has been updated to show political and some topographical changes of the ensuing seven years. Projected railroad lines are shown running everywhere in the west. The 1872 edition is the first to include text next to the population tables, not present in the 1871 edition, but does not show Yellowstone. The 1873 edition also includes a re-set publication line, still referencing Haasis & Lubrecht and Smith & McDougal as the printer, but within a different layout and type font.

Rarity

OCLC locates only one example of the second state of the 1873 map including Yellowstone (Yale).

Not in Rumsey (who notes 1871 and 1874 states and also identifies the Warren Heckrotte Copy of the 1873).
