The Original Las Vegas

Entertaining 1970 poster map of Las Vegas, by artist Henry Hinton, illustrating before any of its "modern" hotels.

The strip is shown from the Hacienda to Fremont Street, with a wide array of period caricatures of Vegas tourists and locals.  Caesars Palace, built in 1966, is shown, but not even the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino (built in 1973) appears on the map. Circus Circus Casino (constructed in 1968) is shown, but the original 15 story tower was not built until 1972).

The group of elderly male conventioneers chasing scantily clad women in bathing suits from the Convention Center toward the strip captures the essence of the Vegas tourism message, circa 1970.

The image captures the essence of Las Vegas one year before the publication of Hunter Thompson's classic Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas.
