Sport Fishing in the Gulf of California in the 1960s

Rare separately published map promoting the Internationals Guaymas Yacht Club, in Guaymas, Mexico.

This racy Baja / Gulf of California sport fishing promotional map is a remarkable piece of 1960s ephemera capturing a remarkable period when weekend outings from Arizona and Southern California to Guaymas, Rocky Point (Puerto Peñasco) and other destinations on the Gulf of California, as well as Glamis and the Salton Sea, where in their heyday as exotic locales.

Bill Valentine's promotional poster for the International Guaymas Yacht Club offers a pictorial overview of the club's location in San Carlos Bay, highlighting available activities and services. This mid-20th-century piece reflects the club's offerings and the regional marine life.

The map, set against a backdrop of the bay, uses illustrated icons and texts to denote various points of interest such as yacht and trailer rentals, a restaurant, and accommodations like Hotel 'La Posada' and Trailer Park. It includes a key to the best fishing months, featuring the types of fish likely to be caught, depicted with illustrations along the map's border.

Bill Valentine was active in the sport fishing industry in the 1950s to the 1970s.  He wrote a column in the Arizona Republic, a book about fishing at Rocky Point and was a member of the Cholla Bay Sportsman's club 

This map stands as a historical guide to the recreational facilities around San Carlos Bay, as well as a reflection of the era's sport fishing and yachting culture, with practical information for enthusiasts of the time.
