The Latest General Postal Map of Europe

Monumental postal map of Europe, published in Vienna in the midst of the Napoleonic Wars.

This rare postal map of Europe first appeared in 1798 and is considered one of the earliest published works of Tranquillo Mollo (1767-1837). Mollo initially worked as an assistant in the music publishing house "Artaria & Co." in Vienna from 1792 but became a partner with his compatriot Giovanni Cappi in 1793.  The work includes a small inset map: "From St. Petersburg to Moscow are 730 versts, or 54 3/4 posts. From Vienna to Moscow are 147 1/2 posts".-

The map includes a meticulous compilation of the 100s of different postal routes in Europe, each individually annotated to show 8 different types of postal service.

The full tite translates as follows:

Latest General Postal Map of Europe in which all postal routes of all European states are shown according to the most reliable postal books. With further use of the best astronomical determinations of locations and the most excellent geographical aids. Designed by Johann Pongraz, Lieutenant of the Imperial and Royal 2nd Field Artillery Regiment, according to the latest postal reports and directories, but supplemented and corrected in the year 1807.

We note at least 3 states of the map:  1798, 1804 and 1807.
