Description

Scarce map of Mexico, Texas, Upper California, etc., from a rare Brussels edition of Conrad Malte-Brunn's Atlas Complet.

Two mythical rivers extend from San Francisco to the twin Salt Lakes. Mt. St. Joseph is named, an early tribute to Jedidiah Smith. The California Missions are shown. Many Indian Tribes located. Malte-Brun's maps are well regarded for being thoroughly researched and cartographically accurate. This map reflects contemporary Western Cartography immediately before Fremont, Josiah Gregg and other important maps introduced in the 1840s.
