Thematic Map Published In Wellington

Rare separately published map of New Zealand, highlighting New Zealand's agriculture and industry.

The main map is embellished with vignettes showing different agricultural and mineralogical products found throughout New Zealand.

The charts at the top left are infographic representations of trade information in a pie chart format, showing the exports and imports of New Zealand during that period.

On the left side, the top pie chart labeled "EXPORTS" is divided into segments representing various countries as "DESTINATIONS" for New Zealand's exports. The United Kingdom occupies the largest segment, indicating that it was the primary destination for exports, followed by the United States of America, Australia, and smaller shares going to other countries like France, Canada, and Japan, among others.

The bottom left pie chart labeled "IMPORTS" shows the "SOURCES" of New Zealand's imports. Similar to exports, the United Kingdom is the largest source, followed by the United States and other countries like Canada and Australia.

On the right side, the pie charts labeled "COMMODITIES" break down the types of goods that were exported and imported. The top right chart details the export commodities with products such as butter, wool, and cheese having significant shares, which indicates the importance of agricultural products in New Zealand's exports at the time.

The bottom right chart categorizes the import commodities with items like textiles, apparel, foodstuffs, and vehicles. This diversity in imports reflects the needs for manufactured goods, clothing, food products not locally produced, and transport equipment.

Overall, these infographics provide a visual representation of New Zealand's economic ties and trade practices before the onset of globalization. This sort of information would be essential for understanding the economic history and trade policies of New Zealand during and immediately after World War II.

Rarity

The map is unrecorded.

We locate two examples (UCLA and Christchurch Library) with a slighly different title (Products and Industries of New Zealand) and without the note that this example was distributed to the British Isles by Philip & Tacey, Ltd.
