Description

Rare early automobile road map drawn by John M. Punnett and printed by Britton & Rey in San Francisco.

The advertising on the map references recreational seasons opening in the Summer and Fall of 1912.

This map is an early 20th-century cartographic document highlighting the automobile routes from Portland and San Francisco to Klamath Falls, promoting the recently opened White Pelican Hotel in Klamath Falls, Oregon, which opened its doors in 1911. Compiled by John M. Punnett, this is an extremely early automobile tourism map promoting the Pacific Northwest and Northern California regions.

At the right is an extensive tourist guide, offering users and overview of recreational opportunities within driving distance of Klamath Falls. The key categorizes roads by their condition - from "Good Road" to "Steep and Narrow Road" - and marks amenities such as garages, accommodations, gasoline availability, and water sources, which were essential for early 20th-century automotive travelers.

John M. Punnett is likely one of the Punnett Brothers, who were active map creators and publishers in the San Francisco area in the first few decades of the 20th Century.
