Description

This wonderful, rare school atlas by famed Swedish mapmaker Anders Akerman (1721-1778) includes 30 diverse Swedish-language maps of regions of the world, including a charming map of North America featuring the Sea of the West.

Akerman died in 1778 but his school atlas proved an enduring model for future Swedish didactic cartography. This edition might have been issued by Fredrik Akrel, who provided the map of Sweden.

We date the atlas based on the date given on the map of Sweden (i.e., 1789). On the spine, the atlas is dated 1788. The world map is dated 1768.

Rarity

OCLC records a handful of examples of the edition of 1774, a few in Scandinavian libraries but none in the United States, but it says nothing of this seemingly-updated 1780s edition.

Condition Description
Oblong octavo. Later ¼ calf over marbled paper boards. Engraved title and 30 engraved maps, some folding, all in original outline hand-color. Some early ink manuscript, as illustrated.
