A View Produced as part of a Printing Demonstration?

Charming pictorial view of a mock colonial village erected at the Century of Progress exhibition in Chicago in 1934.

The view appears to be printed from three woodblocks, one with the black image, one with red lettering, and one with green. In the upper right corner is an indication about the genesis of the print: "From ye Ben Franklin Print Shop att ye Colonial Village." To us, this suggests that the view was prepared as part of a demonstration of early printing done at the Village itself. "Ben Franklin's Press" can be seen at number 10 on the view.

The map shows the location of the buildings and plan of the Village, executed by Tallmadge & Watson, Architects. Many of these are recreations of important landmarks from the Colonial era.

According to the vignettes on the sides of the view there was a Village Witch, a Pillory, and a Minstrel Band, perhaps saying more about Chicago in the 1930s than America in the 18th century.
