Description

Rare early map of lower Manhattan from 1827, showing the different wards in full wash color.

The map captures the city shortly after the completion of the Erie Canal, with the built-up areas primarily concentrated below 14th Street, indicating the density of development during that time. The location is particularly notable given that other copies from the same issuance were uncolored, suggesting that this may be a unique or limited edition.

Featured prominently at the lower portion of the map are two inset illustrations of notable architectural landmarks: the Merchants Exchange and City Hall. These edifices were central to New York's civic and economic life, with the former being a nucleus for mercantile activity and the latter a symbol of the city's governance.

The map would be issued again in 1831 by John Langdon.
