18th Century Hand Drawn Map of Skuru area - East of Stockholm

Striking hand drawn map of the area around Skuru, 5 miles east of Stockholm in the Nacka Municipality, likely drawn shortly after the Russo-Swedish War (1788–1790).

The map illustrates Skuru area, as well as its connections by water to Stockholm, with the term Inre Segelleden emellan Dalarö och Stockholm  (the inner sailing route between Dalarö and Stockholm) at the left, with the Skuru färja  (Skuru ferry) shown at the lower left, along with a Krog (Tavern).

The map seems to also show topographical features and roads in the area, including the Landsväg från Värmdö till Högtun - Country road from Värmdö to Högtun.

The map includes an extra flap, which re-draws the lower left section, as illustrated on the second image. The second image seems to show progress in the construction of the ferry landing and buildings up to 1793.

The key identifies the following places:

  • Corps de Logis - Main building or the main body of a large house.
  • Rättarns Byggnad - The Bailiff's building.
  • Ladugårds hus och 2 Stall - Barnhouse and 2 stables.
  • Hus hus och gård - Residential house and yard.
  • Spannmåls Bod - Grain storehouse.
  • Is källare - Ice cellar.
  • Trädgårds byggnad - Garden building.
  • Drivhus - Greenhouse.
  • Pavillon - Pavilion.
  • Torpstuga vid Lugnet - Cottage at "Lugnet" (which means 'tranquility' or 'calmness').
  • Cascaderne - Cascades or waterfalls.
