Description

Nice example of Carey's map of Georgia and Mississippi Territory, the earliest printed map to show its creation.

The Mississippi Territory was carved out of the region ceded by Spain to the United States in the Treaty of San Lorenzo in 1795 and was officially designated by Congress on April 7, 1798. Initially, this territory encompassed what are now the states of Mississippi and Alabama.

The territory's boundaries were readjusted over time but remained extensive until the later creation of the Alabama Territory in 1817.  Ultimately, the Mississippi Territory was dissolved when Mississippi was granted statehood on December 10, 1817, entering the Union as the 20th state.

States of The Map

There are 3 states of the map.

  • State 1 (1796):  Map title is Georgia
  • State 2 (1801):  In the upper borders, a line has been added through the numerals for '10 degrees Longitude. New place names, including Walnut Hills on the Mississippi River and Iberville R. above New Orleans
  • State 3 (1805): Map title changed to Mississippi Territory and Georgia.  Many new place names.
