Description

Extremely rare separately published sea chart of the area from Key Largo to the Dry Tortugas, originally issued by E. & G.W. Blunt in New York in 1846.

The present example is a composite of the the original 1846 Chart with fragments of a Preliminary Chart of the Florida Reefs, issued by the US Coast Survey, and well as a paste down image of a Totten Beacon (an early aid to navigation to warn mariners of the dangerous reef in the Florida Keys), a list of New Signals on the Florida Reefs, and a note from the Office of the Board of Underwriters endorsing Blunt's chartr as "corrected in conformit with Government Surveys . . . [which] should be familiar to every Ship Master in the Trade.

This chart of the Keys is one of Blunt's rarest charts. We note only a single recorded example at Harvard University.

While the chart first appeared to have been composited for a single owner, it appears that the chart is not completely unique in its conception.  An example of this chart is noted in NOAA's National Ocean Survey Historical Cartobibliography II (1982), page 19, described a follows:

127. The Tortugas, Florida, and Carysfort Reefs and Keys, with additions and corrections to 1859. [Scale not given, ca. 1:130,000.) E. & G.W. Blunt, New York. Entered ... 1846...

Monochrome map printed on 3 sheets, assembled: 66.7 x 218.4 cm.-Geographic grid at 10 intervals. -Some lights are hand colored, red and yellow.- Includes reef and island views. An inset from: "Preliminary chart of Florida reefs...": Survey of the Coast of the United States; 1]200,000, 1856, is mounted over a prior inset on this copy; and a "Sketch of the U.S. Survey signals on the Florida Reef is also mounted. in an open space near the title. The copy is torn at folds into 3 pieces.

Rarity

The 1846 The Tortugas, Florida, and Carysfort Reefs and Keys is extremely rare.  We note a single example offered for sale by Susanna Fisher in a 1988 catalogue.

OCLC locates 1 example, which includes the pastedown Totten Beacon and list of reefs, but not the Preliminary Chart of the Testimonial (Harvard University).
