Description

Hand-colored lithographic view showing the third day of the Battle of Gettysburg (July 3, 1863), published by Charles Magnus.

The image depicts day 3 of the largest land battle ever fought in North America.

The view shows the battlefield from behind the Union lines, with advancing Confederates in the distance. At the center, a Union officer sends a messenger with orders, surrounded by gunfire. Union reinforcements are shown at the right, bearing a battleworn American flag.

Having attacked both ends of the Union line, Confederate General Robert E. Lee pushed forward into the center of the Union line along Cemetery Ridge. Over 12,000 Confederate soldiers advanced three-quarters of a mile across open ground, with nearly half lost in the ensuing battle.

Known as Pickett’s Charge, the event was the “high-water mark of the Confederacy,” with Confederate battle successes declining precipitously thereafter.
