Description

Decorative pictorial map of the area between the James and York Rivers in Virginia.

The map depicts three historically significant colonial Virginia towns, focusing on the period between the establishment of the first English settlement in Jamestown in 1607 and the surrender of Cornwallis in Yorktown, which ended the Revolutionary War in 1781, and the Battle of Williamsburg in 1862 during the Civil War.

Illustrations depict landmark buildings, events, scenes from colonial life and portraits of historical figures such as Captain John Smith, Chief Powhatan and George Washington. The cartouche is decorated with a picture of a colonial soldier with clipper ships in the background. Includes the state seal of Virginia, its colonial coat of arms, and a compass rose.
