Description:

Early Engraved Map Depicting A Section of Martin Behaim's Globe of 1492

Extremely rare map illustrating the "Western" Section of Martin Behaim's Globe of 1492, showing the region from Madeira and Grand Canary Island to China and Java Major, with America conspicuously absent from the map.

Among the more remarkable features of the map are:

  • The depiction of the mythical St. Brendan's Island and Antilia Island (mythical Islands of the Pacific)
  • Behaim's depiction of Japan (Cipangu)
  • Early depiction of the China Coastline (Cathai)
  • Java Major (Marco Polo)

The map shows a section of Martin Behaim's globe, one of the earliest surviving globes and the perhaps the most famous of all pre-Columbian globes, which exists in only a single example.

De Murr's image of Behaim's globe is the only large format representation of Behaim's globe which we have ever seen on the market.
