Fine example of Philippe Galle's rare map of the World, engraved for the first edition of his Spieghel del Werelt, the first miniature edition of Ortelius' Theatrum Orbis Terrarum.

This exceptionally engraved map appeared only in the earliest editions of Oretlius' atlas, and was quickly replaced by the much smaller Typus Orbis Terrarum, beginning in 1588 (4 x 3 inches).  The present example reflects the superb work of its engraver, faithfully duplicating the details of Ortelius' large 1570 World Map, including most of the same annotations.

The Ortelius-Galle World Map is extremely rare on the market, with the last catalogued entry by Jonathan Potter in November 2001 (Item #4).

The present example has a map of America on the verso.
