Description

Superbly hand-colored aquatint view of lower Manhattan, with Brooklyn Heights and Williamsburg, published by W. Schaus and Goupil in New York, in 1851.

This is one of the great early views of Manhattan from a school that would go on to produce the more famous, but more common, Manhattan views of Currier and Ives.

The view is attractively and realistically rendered, with large shadows cast by clouds over the island.

Wilhelm Heine (1827-1885) and Julius Hermann Kummer (1817- 1869) are credited as the artists.

Another example, less richly-colored, recently sold at Christie's for almost $9,500.
