Striking large format historical map of Romania, in Bucharest in 1901, published by the Institut de Arte Grafice "Carol Gobl".
The map states that it was published for Secondary and Primary educational use. Vignettes showing the Romanian coats of arms, important historical leaders (dating back to Trajan and Decebalus, the last king of Dacia) and images of important places and historical events.
The map includes an elaborate historical key, identifying important points of interest, towns, battles, etc., along with an emphasis on routes, including:
- Old Roman Roads
- The Route of Trajan's various expeditions
- The routes followed by the Barbarian Invaders
One of the more fascinating elements of this map is that the publisher was apparently required to obtain government permission for the publication of this map, as it bears the approval of the Ministry of Religious Affairs and Public Instruction, pursuant to government order number 586, approved on Jaunary 14, 1902. The note at the bottom left states that all copies must bear the signature of one of the authors.
The map appeared in shortly after Romania again became an independent nation. Romania declared its independence from the Ottoman Empire after the Russo-Turkish War, 1877-78. In the 1878 Treaty of Berlin, Romania wasofficially recognized as an independent state. In return, Romania ceded the district of Bessarabia to Russia "in exchange" for the access to the ports on the Black Sea shore, and acquired Dobruja.
The map is apparently very rare. We locate no other examples on OCLC or otherwise, although we do note a record of the publication in the Analele Academiei Romane: Partea administrativă și desbaterile, Volume 24 (1901).
