Fine old color example of Abraham Ortelius's map of Southeastern Europe.

The present example is an exceptionally fine example, which includes Ultramarine color, derived from the semi-precious stone, Lapis lazuli, which was very difficult  to obtain (coming from mines in the Badakhashan province of northeast Afghanistan).  At the end of the Middle Ages, lapis lazuli began to be exported to Europe, where it was ground into powder and made into ultramarine, the finest and most expensive of all blue pigments.

Ortelius based his map on the 1560 map of Giacomo Gastaldi, who in turn drew from classical ancient sources, specifically Plinius, Livius, Bonfinius, Dionus and Aurelius Victor.

An exceptional example, priced to reflect the inclusion of this very rare Ultramarine color.

Condition Description: Exceptional old color example.
