Description

Rare Lafreri School View of Florence

Rare engraved birds-eye view of Florence, set against the surrounding hill, published in Rome by Claudio Duchetti.

The view includes the coat of arms of the Medici and Florence in the upper corners, with key to the major buildings in the city.

One of the earliest Italian engraved views of Florence. The earliest view is a unique woodcut, 1496-90, now in the Kupferstich Kabinet, Berlin. Both R.V. Tooley and Marcel Destombes, the authors of a checklist of maps in the Bibliotheque National in Paris, mistook 'Mugnone f.' identifying the river which flowed past the northern walls of the city, to be the name of the engraver.

The last appearance of the map auction would appear to be Lot 1011, Christies King Street, May 20, 1998, where a poor example (trimmed to platemark, laid down, some discoloration) sold for 2300 GBP. This is the second example of the map we have offered for sale in more than 20 years.
