Fine early Gold Rush Guide map, published in New York by John Distrunell.
The map includes a large inset "Map of the Gold Region California", which comprises most of California.
There are numerous routes to California shown, from eastern seaboard ports and New Orleans, to Mexico and the Isthmus, then up the west coast to San Francisco. Internally the map is quite detailed, though likely not enough to navigate one's wagon across the plains, prairies and mountains. The map includes notes showing "Gold Regn." in California, "Mormon Sett." near Great Salt Lake, etc.
The territories of the day, Indian, Nebraska, New Mexico, Utah, and Oregon, are clearly marked with as up-to-date topography as possible, and notes on the various Indian tribes. In 1852 the California gold rush was in full swing and Americans and foreigners were traveling to the west coast over land and by ship.

4th issue (and last) - 1st issue was 1849, then 1850, 1851 and 1852. The North America map (without the Gold Region inset and the overland and sea routes shown and listed) appeared first as an inset in Smith's huge "Map of the United States of America" in 1843. . . . Full and outline color. Relief shown by hachures. Includes tables of overland and sea routes. California map includes western Nevada, scale (ca. 1:4,600,000). Prime meridians: Greenwich and Washington.
We also note additions of 1849, 1852, 1853, 1854 and 1855, all of which are exceedingly rare.
