Description:

The highly attractive allegorical title page from Volume 2 of Georg Braun & Franz Hogenberg’s epic book of bird’s eye city views.

Issued in Cologne, between 1572 and 1618, in 6 volumes, Braun & Hogenberg’s Civitates Orbis Terraum was one of the most important works of the era, and included 363 views of cities and towns throughout Europe, North Africa, western Asia and Latin America. Volume 2 contained views of several important cities, including Paris, Seville, Lisbon and Cairo.

The present title page is a pageant of classical allegory.  Perched atop an architectural entablature, is Vesta, the Roman goddess of home, hearth and family.  To her left is an allegorical personification of religion, and to her right is the personification of politics. The title can be found below, along with classical figures symbolizing knowledge.
