Description:

Fine early example of Ortelius' first map of Ireland, from Ortelius' Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, the first modern atlas of the World.

First published in 1573, the map is one of the earliest obtainable separate maps of Ireland.  The map is based on Mercator's 1564 map of the British Isles. West is at the top. Includes a number of sailing ships and a coat of arms.

The present example has a hand drawn set of numbers and letters around the edges, in the style of Longitude and Latitude, done in an early (16th Century) hand.
