From Vandermaelen's remarkable 6 volume atlas, which if combined as globe gores forms an immense globe. Vandermaelen accomplished the first atlas mapping of the world on a uniform scale. His treatment of the West is a landmark in the history the cartography of the Western US, undertaking to map in 20 sheets a region which American publishers were virtually ignoring. A fine example.
