Description:

Rare plan of San Diego, prepared by the Spanish Government as part of a concerted effort at the beginning of the 19th Century to prepare more accurate maps of the Spanish Possessions in North America and the Caribbean.

The map is based upon the map of Juan Pantoja, which is also the source for La Perouse's map of San Diego Bay.  While prepared for Spain, the maps were ultimately published by his excellency Senor Don Guadalupe Victoria, the first president of the Republic of Mexico. Jake Zeitlin, the venerable Los Angeles Bookseller of the early and mid 20th Century reported that he had been told that the map was published by Arrowsmith in London. The quality of the paper and engraving certainly suggest that this is possible. The map is rare.  Only 4 recorded examples listed by OCLC (Bancroft, Huntington, University of Arizona and UC San Diego).
